Cam Honan on the hiking life

Cam Honan

Cam Honan has hiked across 56 countries on six continents, logging over 96,500 km in three decades.

Between July 2011 and December, 2012, he set out on a dozen consecutive thru hikes that took him through 29 US states and 4 Canadian Provinces, a trip known as the 12 Long Walks.

Backpacker Magazine called him “the most traveled hiker on earth”.

I’ve wanted to speak with Cam for ages about his excellent website The Hiking Life. It’s an addictive mix of detailed ‘Quick & Dirty’ trail guides, and advice on every aspect of hiking from trip planning and lightweight backpacking techniques to tips for building your backcountry skills.

I consult Cam’s hike summaries before every trip, and I check his site for gear advice.

If you’re looking for Cam in book-form, he’s authored a number of titles for the Berlin-based publisher gestalten that will provide you with a lifetime of inspiration. They’re the perfect glossy coffee table gift for the traveler on your list.

Cam Honan is the author of Wanderlust Nordics, Wanderlust Himalaya, Wanderlust Mediterranean, Wanderlust USA, The Hidden Tracks, and other books.

You can read more about him on his excellent Hiking Life website, and follow him on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

We spoke about his favourite Nordic trails, how to go light by ditching your tent and sleeping bag, and why you should see the world at walking speed.
