It's far too easy to go crazy buying snacks and haribo - and then have to carry so much extra weight!

I recall Reinhard Messner saying he took speck and a hard dry Tyrolean bread to Antarctica and on Himalayan expeditions. If you’re hungry all the time and losing weight boost your fat any way you can. If you’re a vegan, I guess oil is the way to go, (add it to your oatmeal in the morning) but if you can find fatty dried meat or hard cheese like salami or Parmesan that is stable, you may find more energy and fewer crashes. Obviously there are so many ways to fuel yourself and discussions about food are like a walk thru landmine-strewn alpen meadow, but a lower carb/ higher protein and higher fat diet might feel good. It’s worked for me and I’m rarely hungry while hiking or otherwise, and never carry chocolate or sweets on the trail. That said I’ll ALWAYS stop for cake at any hut I come across. Happy trails!

I pick up cheese and dried meat whenever I can find it, but otherwise rely on nuts etc during the day, high caloric density and easy to pack. I pass through towns often enough that I can demolish a burger, crepes, etc to compensate for the cold oatmeal and couscous the rest of the time. I don't mind the monotonous diet, it's simple, packs light enough, no fuss.
