I love walking in England. I just returned from a walk along the North Downs Way that ended in Canterbury. I would love to continue the walk to coast someday. My experience was part homage to my late Latin teacher, a priest who worked in the Vatican and taught a full teaching load in his spare time. For the walk I compiled a book of Latin readings that pertain to the area of Canterbury, from Julius Caesar to Bede to Gregory the Great to less known writers like Edward Grim and William Fitzstephen, who gave us vivid eyewitness accounts of the murder to Thomas Becket. And there’s more, including the relics of Thomas More (haha) interred at St Dunstan’s. His correspondence with Erasmus is great fun. We read all of these things in school and he would create reading guides for our day trips from Rome.
What a great idea for a walk. I often wish I'd had a teacher like yours. Not of Latin necessarily, but one who leaves the sort of impact that resonates for a lifetime.
I travelled to England several times, but it was almost always work-related. The only walking I did was a couple (far too short) day hikes in Scotland.
