Auf wiedersehen. I know how strange it can feel to leave a big-ass city, which has so many physical reminders of your presence. They will (presumably) endure well beyond, when you are nary a blip. I felt the same way leaving NYC, and I was only there for five years (though it was from ages 24 to 29, so they were particularly formative).

Good luck to you and Tomoko. I look forward to following your next chapter, literally and figuratively ;).

P.S. That theater that shows Casablanca looks so cool. If I'm ever in Berlin, I'm gonna have to go.

Thanks Adam. Berlin was the longest I've lived anywhere since I left my hometown for university, and that last flat was the longest I've stayed in one place (five years there, four in Kreuzberg). It's the first place I've left and felt a bit wistful; every other time I couldn't wait to go. But it was definitely time for a change.

Casablanca at the Lichtblick Kino is always a highlight. The other kino I loved was the Babylon, at U-bahn Rosa-Luxembourg-Platz. You can see Metropolis with a live orchestra.

Travel well . That post made me wistful for a place I have never visited

Thanks Gordon. We will really miss Berlin, and Europe in general, especially being able to drop into so many different cultures within a short flight.

I loved this final walk around Berlin Ryan. But hey you are on your way to Tokyo not to the cemetery. It will all be there in a few years time when you are back for a holiday, catch up with friends and a midnight viewing of Casablanca. You have a whole positive new thing happening going forward. I think it will be a good move for you both. A new place new energy.

Thanks Carl. It still feels like we're just on a long trip, especially because we're going to the in-laws today, and then a short stay place in Tokyo, just like on any other visit. I don't think it'll really sink in until our things arrive from Europe.

I don't know when or if we'll get back to Berlin. Travel to Europe is difficult with the Japanese yen being so low, and publishing being so poorly paid. I do have a couple long Euro-hikes I'd still like to do. But I suspect my travel focus will shift back to this side of the world for the next few years. I've traveled a lot of East Asia, but there are still undiscovered places.

Thanks Larry. Arrived in Tokyo last night, slightly foggy from the flights.
