As usual, a great interview. I have considered myself a bit of a train maven over the years, haven taken many long distance trains in India, Italy, other Euro countries and even in US and Canada. So I loved hearing Nicky’s info. In 1969 I took an accidental train journey from Sofia, Bulgaria to Warsaw, passing through stations in Bucharest & (then) Lvov. Now THAT was crazy. There was no dining car and the trains ran on coal. Only through the kindness of fellow passengers from all over the Eastern Bloc did I eat at all!

In September I plan to travel to the Orkneys by train from Edinburgh and for the life of me cannot figure out whether a rail pass makes sense over booking early, whether I as a foreigner can get a senior pass etc. The rail websites are confusing! I’m going to find Nicky’s book to see if I can become enlightened!

Enjoy your Pyrenees trek. Looks hard!

Thank you Ann, glad you enjoyed it. I love travel by train too. Did the night train Krakow to Lviv run several years ago, but have mostly travelled by rail in Asia.

Hey Ryan:

Do the trains discussed in your podcast stop in any remote locations away from the community stops? In the US, there are trains that drop backpackers in the wilderness between stops.

Not that I know of. Maybe the routes in Norway? Nowhere in Europe is very remote. Though I'm passing through the closest thing to it. I'm currently 9 days into a traverse of the Pyrenees by the Haute Route. 201km hiked so far from my starting point on the Atlantic. Just passing through a town, caught a signal.
