The Road to Oxiana by Robert Byron (London: MacMillan & Co. Ltd, 1937)
A bible for my generation of travel writers. The account of a journey taken through Persia and Afghanistan in 1933-4. Structured as a random diary, this a brilliant mix of personal vignette, scholarship and descriptive writing.
